Hiring for Cultural Fit vs. Competence

Earlier this week I continued my series about the three most important tools a CEO needs to succeed: credibility, competence, and caring. A good CEO cannot thrive on just one of these alone, and last week Brad Feld (author of a blog I follow regularly – Feld Thoughts) brought up a great question about the varying traits and skills of employees at all levels, particularly in early stage companies: Should you hire more for cultural fit or competence?  The short answer: Don’t hire the person who is higher in competence than cultural fit.
